It is shocking (well maybe not) that more than 10% of the world population is currently obese and that since 1975 the worldwide obesity has nearly tripled. The numbers keep increasing which explains why more people are starting to eat healthy.
A lot of us think that it is expensive to eat healthy. Even when we know what to eat for our health, we’ll rather choose the unhealthy stuff because we feel they are cheaper than the one we should be eating #healthyfood.
1. Plan Your Meals
Planning is IMPORTANT when shopping for foodstuff. A lot of us don’t plan our meals because we probably don’t see the need to. But when you want to eat healthily and you are on a budget you really need to plan.
2. Shop In Season
Foodstuffs are cheaper when you purchase them in season. You can buy in bulk when they are in season so you can use some and store the rest for when they are needed.
3. Fruits And Vegetables
Brethren and sisthren, fruits and vegetables should always be at the top of your list when shopping for foodstuff. Most fruits are naturally low in fat, sodium and calories. Fruits are also sources of many essential nutrients that are under consumed, including dietary fibre potassium and folic acid. Diets that are rich in potassium help to maintain healthy blood pressure. Vegetables provide nutrients vital for health and maintenance of our bodies.
4. Pack Your Lunch
It certainly requires more time and planning but is definitely a better option than eating out. Especially, when you eat out on a regular. packing your food for lunch gives you total control of what goes into your body as some of the foods bought outside are probably not cooked in a totally hygienic environment or they are cooked with bad oil or not so good ingredients.
5. Cook In Large Quantities
Cooking in large quantity does not only save more time but it saves more money. How about cooking a big pot of stew or soup over the weekend; store in the freezer; then take whenever needed.
6. Say No To Carbonated Drinks
Replace carbonated drinks, juices etc with water. Water is free and better. Carbonated drinks just add more unhealthy stuff in our body and if you probably want to have something sweet you can make your own healthy smoothies and juices with your fruits and vegetables.
7. Buy From The Market
Some of us spend more when we go to the big malls and supermarkets to buy some of our foodstuffs. These foods are packaged in fancy nylon and fancy bags and are cleaned for us but we get to pay for these fancy stuff one way or the other. How about going to our big markets to purchase these items from the men and women selling there and hopefully see something to amuse you at the market (I always smile at the market because a lot of the things I see in the markets amuse me).
